Warm Up, Cool Down and Get Adjusted: A Chiropractor’s Guide to Safe Workouts
Embarking on a workout without proper preparation is like driving a car without warming up the engine—it’s a receipt for disaster. Now that the weather is warming, I often see more injuries related to activity. People are more active, exercising outside and going to the gym, and therefore more prone to injury. To optimize your fitness routine and safeguard against injuries, incorporating a warm up and cool down routine is essential. In addition, integrating chiropractic care to your fitness regimen can provide additional benefits to support your overall wellbeing.
The Warm Up:
A proper warm up primes your body for exercise by increasing blood flow to the muscles, raising core body temperature, and enhancing joint mobility. Dynamic movements are key to a warm up and your focus should be placed on the muscles you use within the workout. Check out my favorite hip mobility warm up I perform on a leg day!
The Cool Down:
Cooling down after a workout is just as crucial as warming up. Incorporating static stretches (like the hip flexor stretch pictured) and gentle movement exercises during the cooldown phase promotes muscle recovery, reduced post exercise soreness, and enhances flexibility.
The Chiropractic:
Chiropractic care focuses on optimizing spinal alignment and joint function. Regular chiropractic adjustments can enhance mobility, reduce pain, and improve biomechanics, allowing for smoother movement patterns during exercises.
Combining a proper warm up and cool down routine with chiropractic care forms a comprehensive approach to injury prevention. A well aligned spine and properly functioning joints reduce the likelihood of muscular imbalances, overuse injuries, and biomechanical dysfunctions that commonly occur during exercise. Remember taking care of your body today sets the foundation for a healthier and injury free tomorrow!
