Shop Like a Pro: American in Paris Edition

Right on bustling King Street you’ll find American in Paris, a local boutique that has been around since the 90s, but is being reimagined by Founder & Creative Director Alex who took the reins a few years ago after her mother (and owner of the shop) Joelle, passed away.

I wandered into AIP when it first reopened. Alex greeted me and sold me one of the best swimsuits I’ve ever owned. I’d never seen anything like it and I’ve  never seen anyone with it. That’s the kind of boutique American in Paris is. We stood there chatting about her incredibly creative and impressive professional journey thus far, and how she finds all sorts of cool unique pieces for the store while traveling the world. This women’s boutique is more than just a shop—it’s a vibe.

Last week I popped into AIP and when I first walked in, I beelined it for the boots! I’ve heard so much about the custom riding boots and I’ve had my eye on the black front-zip style, but I also fell in love with the brown pull-ons! Alex recently partnered with two storied boot makers from Argentina who specialize in custom riding boots for some of the world’s top polo players and equestrians. The full experience is unique to the customer - pick the style, leather, finishes; they measure your foot, calf, leg in store. Takes about 4-6 weeks to turn around. Handmade in Argentina from Argentinian hide.

Bespoke services are a big part of the custom experience at AIP. Custom riding boots are not the first bespoke offering at the store. Customers can also customize clutches inspired by vintage lacquer bags and can pick the lining, crystal closure and design!

Ana, who has been working at American in Paris for over two years, walked me through just about everything the boutique has to offer. She was so knowledgeable about the products, and was extremely helpful in making great suggestions! AIP carries Ana’s custom jewelry line! So cool.

American in Paris also offers signature label silk leisurewear, which is hanging in the front in a kaleidoscope of colors and prints. Perfect for the jet-setter because it can go super casual with kicks and then be dressed up with heels for the ideal tarmac-to-table scenario. I went for the new striped silk pants and paired them with the cool silver slip ons that they sell (and I already own)! Speaking of silk, Alex sells her own line of silk shirts. I quickly grabbed the funkiest one off the rack!

The oversized, textured, voluminous sweaters at AIP are next level. From over the top tasseled alpaca sweaters to less razzle-dazzle but still just as lush, these sweaters are made from natural fibers like alpaca and merino and hand-knit from one of the oldest mills in Argentina (the brand is Milana). I popped on the light pink tassel sweater because I’m really into pairing pepto pink and chocolate brown! Loved it so much. The texture is so unique and cool. These pieces will live in your closet forever and make such a statement!

Last, but certainly not least, a big must try is the Alex dress! It cinches in the back and stays loose in the front. Think of it as a chic vibe to a boyfriend shirt. You tie the belt around the waist on the inside, giving it a comfortable, but very put together look! I tried it on and fell in love.

When you’re bopping around Old Town, put American in Paris on your list of must-try shopping spots! Until next time!
