Comeback Careers

Maybe some of you can relate to this. I admit that sometimes I am fearful or anxious or overwhelmed with the mélange of responsibilities I have. I own a small business in Old Town, I am a wife, a mother of three in college, and have three elderly parents. This time of year seems to be the perfect time to write this post, not about fashion but about inspiration!

Since you're reading this, you are probably well aware that Old Town has a number of female entrepreneurs with their own businesses in several different sectors: food, fashion, design, books, art, and crafting, just to name a few. You might even know my friend Ginny Brzezinski, who recently co-authored the book, Comeback Careers, with her sister-in-law, Mika Brzezinski, as part of Mika’s “Know Your Value” book series. I know Ginny from the many PTA meetings, youth soccer and basketball games, and Friday evenings in the park spent together. Fast forward 15 years and it’s hard to believe how our lives have changed. Our kids are all off in college and we are rediscovering who we are. This can be a lonely time but also an incredibly wonderful time as we decide what we want to do next. We suddenly have time to ourselves (shocking!). We have the time to remember our talents, have engaging conversations with our friends, and truly be ourselves.

This also means that each of us has the opportunity to follow our passion. Maybe that means starting your own business, perhaps it means going back into the workplace that you loved before “life” pulled you away, or maybe it’s volunteering and using your gifted talents that way. The sky is the limit! Our friend Hannah started Opal Music Studio; and a group of amazing women founded Together We Bake. The opportunities for our overly qualified age group (I’m referencing my 50’s) are endless if we persevere. No matter your age, the defining quality is to not let fear of failure stop you from getting started. Be brave. Be overly prepared. Be you!

I highly recommend Comeback Careers and embrace women of all ages to seize the day! This book is geared towards women in their 40’s, 50’s, and beyond but I believe my 19-year-old daughter should read it too. The tips are priceless. Below are two links of interviews with Mika and Ginny to get you started. You might find yourself ordering their book and being as impressed as I was. My husband has now read it too! Stop into Old Town Books and they will order a copy for you.
