What We’re Loving: Thanksgiving Traditions
Thanksgiving arrives next week, officially kicking off the holiday season. We all hold dear our traditions and ways of sharing our gratitude. It may be a turkey trot in the morning, Friendsgiving, dinner out at a local restaurant, hosting family from out-of-town or traveling to visit loved ones. We asked our contributors to share their Thanksgiving traditions and a few also shared their favorite dish. See if you share any of these traditions:
Katelin, Family First Law: I like to have Thanksgiving with a big group, it's such an expensive holiday to fly home for just a weekend, so I find that I have a lot of friends who stay in the area and want to host or have me host for them! This year I just moved into a new house, so Friendsgiving at my house will start again next year. Everyone always brings a dish and it's so much fun! We even learned potstickers and gravy are amazing together!
Lauren, XML Financial Group: I'm shaking it up this year with Friendsgiving as the main event - and I can't wait! This will be my first time eating turducken, too.
Britt, The Patterson Group: My Thanksgiving tradition is watching the Macy's Day parade in the morning.
Adrien, Adrien Cotton Wellness: We host Pies before Thighs! Hosting again at 9am! Best way to feel GREAT going into your Thanksgiving feast: swing a turkey and the winner takes it home!
Laura, Convene Architecture: We always divided and conquered on Thanksgiving. My mom, my uncle, and I would stay home and cook the turkey, while my husband, son, in-laws, and a mess of cousins would go somewhere outdoors and fun – the Smithsonian National Zoo or skating at the National Gallery of Art’s Sculpture Garden Ice Rink. We’d then regather at home for cheese, drinks, and the feast to follow, with lots of joy! Now that my son is grown and cousins scattered, a smaller group of us all cook together!
Kristin, Kristin Try Interiors: I’m adding this new Parmesan Brussels recipe for Thanksgiving!
Kendall, Moneta Accounting Solutions: I’m going to make roasted brussel sprouts and butternut squash with bacon and topped with crumbled goat cheese and pomegranate seeds. We will also have a staple family recipe from Jean’s mom which is Pineapple Casserole - a baked dish that contains pineapple, cheddar cheese, and ritz crackers. Don’t judge until you try it!
Hattie, ERA Boutique: Since the day Tiffani, Bay, and I moved here, Anne's family was our family. Gathering with her family at Thanksgiving IS our tradition. Thanks, Meg!
Rainbow, Alexandria Stylebook: We like our traditional turkey staples – and there are always at least three to four variations of potatoes (mashed, sweet, au gratin, super salty) for all to choose from. But the one item I will never go without: pumpkin pie! The challenge in recent years is finding out how to watch the football games – we’re all cord-cutters!
